SBA Expands 504 Financing Flexibility for Energy Projects

Businesses investing in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable facility improvements will soon have greater access to SBA 504 financing.

Effective October 1, 2026, the Small Business Administration‘s (SBA) new SOP 50 10 8.1 eliminates the lifetime aggregate borrowing cap for qualifying SBA 504 Energy Public Policy projects. While the maximum SBA debenture remains $5.5 million per qualifying project, borrowers can now access SBA 504 financing for multiple eligible projects over time.

This update provides several key advantages, including:
  • Up to $5.5 million in SBA financing per qualifying project
  • No aggregate borrowing cap across multiple qualifying energy projects
  • Greater flexibility to finance future facility, equipment, and energy improvements
Projects may qualify by reducing energy consumption by at least 10%, generating more than 15% of a facility’s energy through renewable sources such as solar or wind, or incorporating sustainable design features that reduce environmental impact.
For businesses planning energy-efficient upgrades, renewable energy investments, or sustainable building improvements, this change creates new opportunities to leverage SBA 504 financing as part of their long-term growth strategy.
