Strong Financing Partnerships Fuel Opening of New Japanese Restaurant

Menominee, MI – A new chapter is beginning for the historic waterfront city of Menominee with the opening of Kashiwa, a Japanese-inspired restaurant. Formerly Berg’s Landing, the restaurant has been serving fine-dining American seafood since 1996. New owners Zhenyun (John) Wu and Fang Tang are introducing Japanese dishes while keeping some of the community favorites, creating an immersive dining experience with a sushi bar, hibachi meals, and specialty beverages.
John, a trained chef with years of experience in New York City and past restaurant ventures in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, will manage the kitchen, while Fang will oversee front-of-house operations and staff. The couple’s new venture will create five full-time jobs and support a minority-owned business in Menominee, which currently lacks a Japanese restaurant.

BLP was able to achieve this project through collaboration with Wesley Stripling, President of Community Bank at First National Bank and Trust, and the SBA 504 loan, which financed the purchase of real estate and equipment. First National Bank and Trust financed 51% of the project costs, while BLP provided 25.5% through the SBA 504 loan program, reducing the owner’s down payment to 23.5%. Additionally, thanks to the cooperation of Michigan CDCs, BLP was able to cross the state line to best serve this business and bring the project to life.

The team at BLP was great to work with. They were a tremendous help to both me and the borrower, getting us through the loan application, approval, and closing process.
Wesley Stripling First National Bank & Trust

This was a unique project for BLP, which typically focuses on lending to Wisconsin businesses. It was through the collaboration of multiple partners—First National Bank and Trust, BLP, and Michigan CDCs—that Kashiwa became a reality, marking an exciting addition to the downtown community and a win for local economic growth.

Kashiwa is now open for lunch and dinner throughout the week, with extended evening hours on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.

BLP is the finance team for the Racine County Economic Development Corporation (RCEDC). Every project must be evaluated and reflect an element of community development.

BLP, with offices in Racine County and Brown County, is licensed to serve businesses and collaborate with banks throughout Wisconsin. Its commitment to supporting small businesses and enabling franchise growth has made it a trusted partner for entrepreneurs seeking to leverage the benefits of SBA lending programs.
